After passing the House near unanimously in June, the legislative package to end Surprise Medical Billing was heard in the Senate Insurance Committee last week. HB 4459, 4460, 4990, and 4991 were originally referred to the Senate Health Policy Committee but were later transferred to the Insurance Committee. The Insurance Committee had previously debated the topic under legislation introduced by the Chairwoman, Senator Lana Theis, last year.
A vote on the bills was anticipated to be this week, however, due to a State Senator testing positive for COVID-19, legislative activities including session and committees have been postponed. With strong bipartisan support, even with the delay, Surprise Billing reform is likely to be done this year.
